FOREWORD
This book, "An Evaluation of Tirmidhi's
Contribution Towards Islamic Tradition" by Mr Abdool Kader
Hoosen is to my knowledge the first of its kind to be
published in South Africa. Mr Hoose who obtained an M.A.
degree with distinction in Islamic Studies at the Rand
Afrikaans University, has many years experience as a teacher
of Islamic Sciences at the well-know Daar al-Ulum in
Newcastle. During his visits to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and
other Middle Eastern countries he availaed himself of the
opportunity to obtain the latest editions of and studies on
Tradition by Muslim scholars. It is thus no surprise that this
study exemplifies a thorough knowledge of the relevant
reference material in the original Arabia and Urdu. He also
acquainted himself with the state of research in the Western
academic tradition. Particularly valuable is his evaluation of
available Arabic editions of Tirmidhi's Al-Jaam'i
In various ways this book will be a useful
reference for students who wish to orientate themselves with
regard to literature on Muslim Traditions. It serves as an
invaluable introduction to the particular nature of Tirmidhi's
compilation and the methods followed in the six canonical
collections to determine the reliability of the Traditions.
The bibliography serves as a guide for further reading while
the glossary defines the Arabic technical terms emplyed by the
traditionists in a precise and clear manner. Especially useful
is the "hands on" illustration of the theoretical contents in
the final chapter where four selected traditions from
Al-Jaam'i are reproduced in Arabic, translated and provided
with appropriate comments.
I trust that this will be the first in a
series of publications by the capable hands of Mr Hoosen and
that this book will receive the acclamation it
deserves.
